railML – The Norwegian railway sector Data Exchange Format

railML® – Railway Markup Language – is an open-source XML based data exchange format, which shall enable an easy communication of heterogenous railway applications.

railML is developed by railML.org, a charitable sector association since 2002, in close cooperation with all interested institutions and businesses of the railway sector across Europe and worldwide. railML.org is open to everyone and maintains the standard. For more information, please visit railml.org.

RailML exists in several versions. For more information on the versions and their timeline please go to railml.org. The Norwegian sector currently uses different tools that support several certified and un-certified versions of railML. Please visit railml.org for the current status.

In general version 2.2 and 2.4nor are used. But most tools in the sector have recently or are currently upgrading to version 3.2 and 3.3.

railML2.4nor

The version railML2.4nor uses railML2.4 as a basis and adds extensions to meet Norwegian requirements. It is no competing standard to railML2.4 but is the Norwegian usage of railML2.4 in addition to Norwegian extensions. It shall serve as a data exchange format for the Norwegian railway sector from 2019 onwards.

The majority of Norwegian extensions from railML2.4nor have been incorporated into the development of the railML2.5 version standard. This version is also the foundation of the first release of the ISO Raildax (www.raildax.org) standard in 2022. This version will continue to be supported until the end of the 2020s.

The Railway Directorate is currently actively working on a revision of ISO Raildax based on railML3.4 as part of the RailDAX project planned to be implemented in 2027.
